Highlights:
• Competitiveness and demand for certification have resulted in more companies following best practices.
• Despite this, thousands of organizations claiming to provide ITAD services continue to compete only on price, disregarding quality and security of their service.
• It is hoped that this fraction of companies will either become certified or go out of business, as certification is the way to guarantee outcomes.
Rike’s Assessment:
What we’ve seen over the years, and because both e-Stewards and R2 have grown and had more people come into the tent, so to speak, and follow best practices, that’s one of the focus or one of the benefits of these programs that are demand and competition driven, that says if you want to compete then you need to be certified, and that’s a positive, because it has drawn in people that weren’t following best practices and recognize that if they want to compete then they need to be certified and follow these practices. But there’s still, you know, hundreds or thousands of organizations out there that claim to do ITAD, and may be buying, selling, brokering, recycling, and they may be doing a variety of activities, but there are no strict requirements that they’re following. They are focused and competing on price, not on the quality and security of the service they’re providing. So, I think we’ll always see that fraction of companies that are doing that, hopefully more and more will either go out of business or come into the tent and become certified because that’s the way we really enforce or guarantee outcomes.
